Workshop / De Appel Curatorial Programme

Friday 10 November 2017

L’appartement 22 is hosting an internal workshop with the current participants of De Appel Curatorial Programme (Amsterdam): Sun A Moon (Korea, 1985), Luay Al Derazi (Bahrain, 1991), Jagna Lewandowska (Poland, 1986), Jo-Lene Ong (Malaysia, 1981), Arkadiusz Półtorak (Poland, 1992), Miriam Wistreich (Denmark, 1985). The workshop “Curating on a Social Stage” is conceived by Karima Boudou (Curatorial Delegation) and will unfold between the space of L’appartement 22 in Rabat, the banks of the Bouregreg River and Salé. The outcome of the workshop will be published in collaboration with the participants in one L’appartement 22’s platforms.

Informations about De Appel Curatorial Programme: Since its inception in 1994 De Appel Curatorial Programme is a prime, internationally respected educational platform in Amsterdam for the advancement of the theory and practice of exhibition making, as well as its manifold ideological framings. Under the new directorship of Niels Van Tomme the programme will continue to pursue these ambitions but will simultaneously also shift towards a more pragmatic and research oriented approach. Six emerging curators with various academic and experiential backgrounds will be asked to develop projects within the framework of De Appel’s newly established theme: modes of de-universalization.

Rather than viewing the exhibition, performance programme, film screening, or any other curatorial activity as static notions, De Appel approaches them as multifaceted concepts with dynamic definitions that should be constantly extended and adapted. Such evolving definitions form a direct motive to develop a curatorial inquiry that offers a conscious rejection of the increasing universalization of curatorial practices, and explores alternative ways of thinking, developing, and implementing artistic activities. In doing so De Appel Curatorial Programme continues to firmly position itself as a laboratory for alternative forms of exhibition making and curatorial activities more broadly.
